Q Why is so much information required for a BER assessment?

A The BER rating is calculated following a thorough assessment of a dwelling’s fabric, orientation, heating method and ventilation etc. In order that the assessment can be done all the relevant information must be provided to ensure that the energy rating is as accurate as possible and reflects the energy usage of the dwelling in question.

Q How long will it take to receive my BER certificate?

A Upon submission of all the relevant documents FIBER will calculate the energy rating of you dwelling(s), this will normally take approximately two weeks. Once the BER has been calculated FIBER will contact you for balance of payment. FIBER will then validate and register your BER with Sustainable Energy Ireland and issue your BER certificate(s). Registration of certificates should not take more than two days.

Q What if I make alterations to my dwelling / build an extension?

A If any alterations are made that will affect your energy rating, such as an extension, then a new BER certificate will be required. Changes in heating methods, ventilation etc will also require a new BER certificate.

Q What is a U value?

A A U value is a measure of the thermal conductivity of a material, the lower the U value, the less heat will pass through the material. When selecting materials for your house, such as insulation and windows, the materials with the lowest possible U values should be used. This will help to increase energy efficiency and will contribute to a better energy rating.

Q What is Boiler Interlock?

A Boiler Interlock is an arrangement of the heating system controls (Room thermostats, , programmable room thermostats, cylinder thermostats, programmers and time switches ) in such a way that ensures that the boiler does not fire when there is no demand for heat.
